Surveys

If you are looking for creative ways to add a little income to your budget, but don’t want to commit yourself to a part-time job, you should look at doing surveys from home.  I know you may be a little skeptical.  I was too at first.  But after doing some research and discussing it with my husband, I signed up with a few companies just to try it out, and boy am I thankful I did!

On average, I do inbetween a half dozen and a dozen surveys a month through a few different companies I have signed-up with, and this gives me an income of about $75-$100 a month.  Of course you won’t be making as much as working outside the home at a part-time job, but the benefits of doing the surveys in your home and at your own pace is well worth it I think.  They are something you can do early in morning before the rest of the family gets up, while your kids are taking their afternoon nap or in the evenings after they have gone to bed.

My husband and I use the extra money when things come along that we would like to have but aren’t necessities that we have alotted in our budget.  For example, I know I mentioned in a previous entry that I have been wanting to buy some Lunapads so that during that during that special time of the month I can be a bit “greener”.  Well, to order what I felt like I needed for my cycle totaled approximately $150.  Typically this would be a blow to our budget, but I used money I had made from taking surveys to make the purchase, and wa-la…I have the Lunapads I have been eyeing!  By investing in Lunapads, I no longer have to worry about throwing away money each and every month on disposable menstrual products, and I don’t have to worry about exposing my body to toxins and chemicals found in these products.

I am sure you have all seen the advertisements out there, either on webpages or maybe even in your e-mail inbox, but you don’t know what survey companies to choose.  Here are a few I have signed up with and have had nothing but good experience with:

www.e-rewards.com

www.globaltestmarket.com

www.surveysavvy.com

www.your2cents.com

After you sign-up, I recommend checking your e-mail at least twice a day.  I check mine early in the morning after my husband has left for work and in the evenings after dinner.  The reason for this is a lot of times companies will post surveys for only a certain amount of people to respond in a certain amount of time.  Once that number of people have responded, the survey is closed and your opportunity to make money is lost.  It takes a few weeks to work taking surveys into your schedule but I think the benefits are worth it.  If you are an experienced survey taker, and you have any tips for readers or survey sites you recommend, please leave a comment.

I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day!

Blessings to You!

Mrs. T

P.S. I also give survey-taking “two thumbs up” because it is sooo environmentally friendly.  You don’t have to go anywhere, which would use gas and put wear and tear on your vehicle.  It doesn’t require you to print anything out, and they take a short amount of time so not much electricity is used.  The only paper that may be involved is the check you receive in the mail.  Yippee!

Getting It All Together

When I first got married, my life as a keeper of the home felt nerve-racking and hectic.   I would constantly fall behind on laundry, forget to do a certain household chore that needed my attention, etc.  I couldn’t help but feel overwhemed, and I couldn’t understand what I was doing wrong.  Then, one day, it hit me—I need a schedule!

My whole life my life has been based on a schedule.  When I was a baby, I am sure my mother fed me, changed me, bathed me and put me down at certain times.  From preschool through high school, I was told what class I had to be at when, and even in college I went to class at certain times and I worked at certain times.  Now that I am married, I need a schedule to be a keeper of the home in an organized fashion.  So, if you are finding that you are going through your days in a daze, and you are struggling to get everything done, try making a schedule.  I have listed mine below to help you get started, but by no means should your schedule look like mine.  Each house is different and each family is different, so each schedule should be different.

Mrs. T’s Daily Schedule

5:30-6:00  Wake up, let dog outside and make bed.

6:00-6:30  Get Dressed, Brush Hair, Etc.

6:30-7:00  Fix Breakfast

7:00-7:30  Eat Breakfast, Wash Dishes & Decide What Is For Dinner

7:30-9:30  Computer Time (Read E-Mail, Update Blog, Check News & Weather Etc.)

9:30-10:30  Let dog outside/walk/exercise

10:30-11:00  Fix Lunch

11:00-11:30  Eat Lunch, Wash Dishes

11:30-1:00  Quiet Time  (Read, Pray, Etc.)

1:00-3:00  Zone Chores

3:00-3:30  Freshen up Time (Make sure living room is tidy, light a candle, freshen up myself, etc.)

3:30-5:30  Fix Dinner

5:30-6:00  Eat Dinner

6:00-6:30 Wash Dishes/Tidy Kitchen

6:30-7:30  Talk with Hubby, Read, Watch Movie Together, Etc.

7:30-8:00  Bathe/Shower

8:00-8:30  Night Routine (lay out clothes, let dog outide, lock-up, etc.)

8:30-9:00  Get Ready for Bed (brush teeth, floss, lotion up, etc.)

9:00-5:30  Sleep

Of course I don’t follow my schedule to the dot, but I use it as something to go by.  You may be asking what Zone Chores are.  Well, to make sure things get done on a regular basis I have divided our home into ”zones” or “areas”.  Zone One includes the entrance, front porch, dining area, office area, and balcony.  Zone Two includes the kitchen and utility room.  Zone Three includes our master bedroom and the master bathroom.  I have listed every chore that could possibly be done in each of our ”zones” so that I have a check list to go by.  Usually I do Zone Three chores on Monday since it includes our master bedroom, and I like to launder sheets weekly at the beginning of the week.  Zone Two on Tuesday and Zone One on Wednesday.  I don’t have a zone for Thurdsay because this is my marketing/errand day.  I also don’t have a zone for Friday because it is a weekend day around our home because Mr. B works 4 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday.

It might also help for you to create a weekly schedule or routine.  For example, Sundays for us include going to church, baking, family time and relaxation.  Mondays include laundry.  Tuesdays I try to clean out my car so it is ready for errands on Thursday.  Wednesdays I do any gardening that may need to be done, as well as update our finances and get bills ready to mail.  Thursdays I make a meal plan for the next week, go to the post office, bank, etc. and do marketing.  Friday and Saturdays are random days for us.  They may include gardening, any home projects we’re working on, spending time with friends, etc.

Just as your life will change by certain events, your schedule will change.  For example, if you have a new baby or if hubby’s job requires new hours your schedule may change dramatically.  The important thing is to tailor your schedule to your home and family and not try to tailor someone else’s schedule to your home and family.

In Him,

Mrs. T

Mr. B’s Favorite Dinner

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Last night I spoiled Mr. T by cooking his favorite dinner–Sour Cream Chicken.  I don’t know where this recipe originated.  I just know my mother got it from a friend many years ago when I was a little girl, and ever since it has been a family favorite.  It’s pretty simple and it only takes a hand full of ingredients.  Before I let you read on though I am going to warn you.  It is not for vegetarians and it is not for anyone trying to watch their waistline.

Ingredients:

1 stick of butter (not margarine or any other scientifically made substitute)

4-6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

Flour

1 pkg. of fresh, sliced mushrooms

1 pint of sour cream

Directions:

Before I begin the cooking part, I want to mention that I usually trim up and season (just salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste) the chicken breasts a few hours ahead of time so they can flavor up.  Anyway, on with the directions.  In a nonstick skillet, melt the entire stick of butter.  Flour chicken breasts and slightly brown in butter.  Remove the chicken.  Saute mushrooms in drippings.  Remove skillet from heat and stir in sour cream.  Place chicken in a single layer on the bottom of a casserole dish.  Pour sour cream/mushroom mixture over browned chicken breasts.  Sprinkle with salt, pepper and garlic powder to taste.  Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 45 minutes or until chicken is very tender.  Enjoy!

Last night I served this with brown rice (which I usually do) and steamed fresh veggies.  So….now I have shared with you the recipe that won over my husband’s heart and tummy!  I hope your weekend is going well.

Blessings to you all!

Mrs. T

500 Items Before November 30th

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Mr. B and I recently renewed our lease for another six months for the apartment we are living in.  I know, I know.  I’m sure a lot of you are saying, “Lease?….Aren’t you just throwing away money?”.  The main reason we are leasing is because we recently moved here to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and as you all know, this was one of the worst hit areas by Katrina.  The housing market is still pretty crazy so we are waiting for it to calm down a bit.  We didn’t want to invest in a house only for the market to dive, us possibly have to move again and then take an enormous loss.  Also, we didn’t want to commit to buying a house when we are both unfamiliar with the area.

Anyway, so our lease will now be up at the end of November and I am already dreading moving everything.  When Mr. B and I first got married and moved-in together in October of this past year we had multiples of almost everything (2 toasters, 5 lamps, 2 coffee tables, 3 printers, 5 sets of dishes, etc.).  Most of the multiples are gone thanks to a yard sale we had early this year at my parents house, but I still feel like we have so much ’stuff’–things that are not really used, they just sit there and take up precious space in our 700 square foot apartment.  You all know what I am talking about.  Clutter.

So to alleviate the problem and make myself feel better about the whole future moving situation I have decided to challenge myself.  My goal is to rid my home of 500 items before November 30, 2007.  Why 500?  Well, I don’t really have a very logical answer to that.  I just thought 100 wasn’t enough and I would still be feeling cluttered, while 1,000 would leave us with an empty apartment.

To keep myself motivated I will be taking pictures for your viewing pleasure and, of course, keeping count of what goes out the door.

Remember, “In everything you do, put God first, and He will direct you and crown your efforts with success.”  Proverbs 3:6

Blessings to You,

Mrs. T

Changes

Some of the topics that has been floating through our home are the ideas of conservation, simplifying, green living and frugality.  I have to admit that since Mr. B works 10 hour days, I usually do most of the reading and researching and then I bring it up information I find interesting in the evenings over dinner.  Of course Mr. B and I have always practiced some levels of conservation and frugality such as turning off the water while brushing our teeth; only running the dishwasher when it is full; being careful about how much we print from the computer; recycling plastic grocery bags and newspapers; and using ceiling fans and open windows instead of air conditioning when we can, etc.  (Although we do live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast so that is only possible a couple of months out of the year.)  To be honest, I used to think we were doing so well by doing those handful of things.  Lately though, as I become more aware and knowledgable I see that there is SOOO much more that we could do to help take care of our planet.  In fact, I feel ashamed that we have only been doing as little as we have been.

One quote that really pulls my heartstrings goes something like this–”We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”  I have to be honest and tell you that I don’t know where I heard that or who said it, but as someone who loves children and hopes to have some of my own one day, it is something that sticks with me.  Over the past few weeks, we have been using cloth napkins and towels more instead of paper napkins and papertowels;  I have bought toliet paper that was made from recycled paper and dishwasher detergent that was biodegradable; and I try to consolidate all my errands (post office, bank, grocery shopping, etc.) to one day.

There are still SOOO many changes that I would like to make but I realize that “going green” isn’t something that happens overnight.  For example, I would like to purchase a set of reusable grocery bags made from hemp or organic cotton so that we can completely eliminate using plastic and paper grocery bags.  I am also saving up to buy a set of Lunapads to eliminate using disposable pads.  (Those of you who don’t already use cloth pads or some other form of alternative protection may be grossed out by the idea, but have you ever thought of all that the chemicals and toxins that your body is exposed to when you wear disposable tampons or pads.  That is what’s GROSS!  Do yourself a favor and do a little research on the topic.  Trust me, your body will thank you!)

Ladies (and gentlemen, if there are any out there) I encourage you to look around your homes and examine your lifestyles.  What disposables in your home can be replaced with reusable products?  What changes can you make in your life to help take care of our planet that our Heavenly Father made for our use?

Blessings To You,

Mrs. T

Welcome to Keeper of My Home!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

When pondering what to write as my first entry, I had a little trouble deciding what it should be about, because I feel the first entry is what my readers will create their first impression from.  I wanted something that would express who I am, what I believe and what I strive to become.  After a lot of thought and prayer, I decided to write about Proverbs 31.  This piece of scripture has become very dear to my heart,  although I must be honest and tell you that it is something that I didn’t come across until a few months after I was married.  Nonetheless, it is scripture that, through the grace of God, has opened my eyes and provided many blessing to my husband and myself in a short amount of time.  For those of you who have never taken a good look at Proverbs 31, I highly encourage you to.  Read and savor each and every word.  I think that not only will you be inspired by God’s word, but you will also be blessed by it.

In Christ,

Mrs. T

P.S. If you are looking for more guidance on the topic of leading a Christian life, I also suggest reading Titus 2.  Blessings to you all!
